How to Style Boutique Dresses when you are over 35
Photos by: Hannah Miller Photography
I love to scroll through my Facebook feed and see all of the adorable styles that so many of the boutiques I follow post. They are just super cute and trendy and fun and oh, not to mention, cheap! Seriously, you can look fun and adorable for at most times lower than $50!
However, most of these adorable finds are modeled on 20-somethings, so when I decide to order one and I receive it, well, let’s just say, it is quite evident that it was not made for someone over the age of 35! Especially with long legs like I have.
That is what happened with this cute dress! Yes, I know the babydoll style is youthful, but I did get one dress that was this style and I do think I actually was able to pull it off and not look like I was trying. I felt stylish and just fun! So, I thought I might venture to add some more “fun” styles to my wardrobe.
I got this dress in and when I pulled it out of the package I was in love. For starters, it is pink, my favorite color. But when I put it on, it was way too short for a woman of my age with long legs. I looked like I was trying and that is not the look I was going for, and it almost looked more like a shirt than a dress. I had a friend suggest that I wear it as a bathing suit cover-up, which might be a possibility, but I did actually want to get some wear out of it, so I began to think. I remembered my white skinny jeans and then looked at my shoes and remembered my fantastic sandals and I knew that would be more of an age-appropriate look for this adorable dress! So, here you have the finished product.
Now, I am not saying that all dresses from these boutiques are like this. There are some women my age should just stay completely away from and there are others that are perfectly okay to wear without doctoring anything up. However, if you do get a little crazy with those Facebook lives and order something like this and want to wear it, where there is a will, there is a way. You just have to put your thinking cap on.
This dress is perfect with white skinny jeans, crop jeans or even shorts would be cute. I know it might cover up the shorts, but it is doable. You could also sport it as a cover-up. It would look adorable when you walk on the beach. Don’t be afraid to create a different look with it to make it more age-appropriate. We want to have fun with our wardrobes and not be so serious all of the time, so adding an item like this to your wardrobe can happen if you just think and look around at the possibilities!
I have linked below some similar styles that you can get creative with yourselves!! Let me know what you think!
