The Importance of Establishing Priorities while Working from Home
Make yourself an example of good works with integrity and dignity in your teaching Titus 2:7
A lunch date, running errands with friends, oh, and a rerun of my favorite television show is on, you know the episode I have to watch even though I have seen it at least 100 times!
These are things that when I first started working from home, I would do instead of my job. I would wake up, try to work a little, and then get off track. My reasoning was always, I have all day to get it done and when it was late at night and I was tired, I would work and my work would not be my best. I was tired and just wanted to get in bed, but I had work to do, so there was no other option.
When we work from home, our priorities are first to our jobs. No matter what temptations come along, we need to do our work first, so that our job is getting the best out of us, not the leftovers. It can be hard when you have friends and family members who don’t understand working from home. It can also be hard when you would rather go to Target and see what new items are in the dollar spot.
This brings me to a story in the Bible, one you all know, Mary and Martha. Martha is running around like a chicken with her head cut off trying to get everything taken care of. Mary is at the feet of Jesus, listening to His every word. Martha gets mad at Mary, but Jesus sets her straight. He lets Martha know how important it is that Mary made Him a priority.
This is how we need to treat our jobs. When working from home, there are distractions and we don’t have people looking over our shoulders to be sure we are working. That means we have to make our work a priority. One of the best ways to establish your priorities is to have a plan.
When I started planning better and made my work my number one priority, I did a better job and was able to enjoy myself more in my day and at night. I did not feel scattered and rushed to complete my work. I looked at my daily schedule and knew what needed to be done and would not stop working until my work was complete.
I know how tempting it can be to put off your work during the day when working from home but try not to. Try to remember that your work needs to be your first priority. While we do have more freedom when working from home, that does not mean that everything else comes before our jobs. Let us remember that doing our jobs correctly is an example of our good works and that brings integrity to Jesus, especially since we should look at doing our jobs as doing work unto Him.
What are some ways you feel that not prioritizing work is not what God wants from us?
Why do you think God wants us to do the best in our jobs and prioritize our work?
